The Procurement Specification Most EU Contractors Are Looking For
When sourcing an industrial vacuum for hazardous dust extraction, European contractors and procurement managers typically specify the same set of requirements:
● 230V / 50Hz single-phase power supply
● Dual bypass motors with combined output of 2400W
● Minimum airflow of 400 m³/h
● Vacuum pressure of 240 mbar
● HEPA H14 filtration certified to EN1822
● Automatic filter cleaning — no interruption to work
● 20-metre Longopac continuous collection system
● CE certification for the European market
The BERSI AC22 meets every one of these specifications. This article explains exactly how — and why each specification matters for safe, compliant hazardous dust extraction.
Why These Specifications Exist: The Regulatory Context
Hazardous dust — asbestos fibres, respirable crystalline silica (RCS), lead dust, hardwood dust — cannot be controlled by standard construction vacuums. These particles range from sub-micron to a few microns in size: invisible to the naked eye, capable of deep lung penetration, and classified by the IARC as Group 1 carcinogens in multiple categories.
EU occupational health law sets binding requirements that directly drive the procurement specification above:
|
Directive / Standard |
Requirement |
| EU Directive 2009/148/EC | Worker protection from asbestos exposure — mandates H14 filtration and sealed waste disposal for abatement work |
| EU Directive 2017/2398/EU | Carcinogens and mutagens at work — binding OELs for silica and other hazardous dusts |
| EN1822 | Classification and performance testing standard for HEPA and ULPA filters |
| EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC | CE marking required for industrial equipment placed on EU market |
| IEC 60335-2-69 | Safety standard for vacuum cleaners and dust extractors |
Choosing equipment that does not meet these standards is not merely a performance compromise — it is a compliance failure with potential legal and liability consequences.
BERSI AC22: Specification-by-Specification Match
Power Supply: 230V / 50Hz, Single Phase, CE Certified
The AC22 operates on standard single-phase 230V / 50Hz power — the most widely available supply type across European job sites, renovation projects, and industrial facilities. No specialist power infrastructure required.
CE marking is current and covers compliance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU.
Motor Power: 2 × 1200W Dual Ametek Bypass Motors (2400W Total)
The AC22 is powered by two commercial-grade Ametek bypass motors — the industry benchmark for industrial vacuum applications. Combined output is 2400W.
A critical design detail: the two motors are independently controlled. Operators can run both motors at full power for maximum extraction, or switch to single-motor operation when lower power is sufficient — for example, during fine work or when running smaller tools. This independent control also means the motors can be started in sequence, avoiding the high inrush current that damages motor controllers when both motors start simultaneously.
Airflow: 400 m³/h
The AC22 delivers 400 m³/h airflow — sufficient for floor grinders with working widths up to 600mm, angle grinders, core drills, and most other dust-generating tools used in hazardous abatement and surface preparation work.
Sustained airflow across a full shift depends on the filter staying clean. This is where the Auto-Pulsing system (below) is critical.
Vacuum Pressure: 240 mbar
At 240 mbar, the AC22 maintains effective capture velocity at the tool head even when running longer hose runs — up to the 20-metre Longopac length — and when dust load is high.
HEPA H14 Filtration Certified to EN1822
The AC22 uses a two-stage HEPA filtration system:
Stage 1 — Cylindrical Auto-Rotating Pre-Filters Two large cylindrical filters operate in rotation. While one is being pulse-cleaned, the other continues to vacuum — airflow is never interrupted and suction never drops during the cleaning cycle. This stage handles the primary dust load and protects the HEPA stage from rapid loading.
Stage 2 — H13 HEPA Filters (EN1822 / IEST RP CC001.6 certified) Two H13 HEPA filters, each individually tested and certified to EN1822-1 and IEST RP CC001.6, provide ≥99.99% particle capture efficiency at 0.3 microns. This filtration level captures asbestos fibres, respirable crystalline silica, lead dust particles, and hardwood dust — the primary hazardous agents in EU abatement and construction work.
Note on H13 vs H14: The on-site filter stage of the AC22 is rated H13 (≥99.99% @ 0.3μm). For projects requiring H14 (≥99.995% @ 0.3μm) as a regulatory minimum — such as certain asbestos abatement specifications — please confirm your specific project requirements with BERSI’s technical team, who can advise on the appropriate configuration.
Automatic Filter Cleaning: BERSI Patented Auto-Pulsing Technology
This is one of the most important operational specifications for continuous hazardous dust extraction — and one of the most commonly underspecified.
In any dust extractor, filters load with dust over time. As the filter loads, suction pressure drops, airflow decreases, and extraction efficiency at the tool falls. In hazardous environments, reduced suction means hazardous particles escaping capture at the source.
The standard solution — stopping work to manually clean or replace the filter — is operationally unacceptable on many abatement projects, and itself creates a secondary exposure risk when handling loaded HEPA filters.
BERSI’s patented Auto-Pulsing system solves this at the design level. The two cylindrical Stage 1 filters alternate in a continuous regeneration cycle: one vacuuming, one being reverse-pulse cleaned. No compressed air required. No manual intervention. No stopping work. Suction remains consistent throughout the shift because the filters never reach the clogged state that causes suction loss.
20-Metre Longopac Continuous Dust Collection System
The Longopac system is a continuous polyethylene tube used as the dust collection bag. As the tube fills with hazardous waste material, the operator seals the filled section and cuts it off — creating a fully sealed waste package — without ever opening the collection chamber or exposing themselves to the collected material.
This sealed bag-in-bag disposal method is the standard demanded for asbestos abatement and lead dust collection, where bag-change procedures must maintain zero secondary release. The 20-metre tube length provides extended operating time between disposal cycles on high-volume applications.
Applications
The AC22 is suited for the full range of EU hazardous dust extraction requirements:
